hello

I own one proof 1989 panda in OMP with box and CoA, and been thinking of slowly adding more years, in the hope i'll someday have a complete set. Obviously i would only buy from reputable dealers, and i don't mind paying $10 or $20 per coin more for peace of mind regarding fakes. I noticed badon said there's a high risk in buying ungraded silver panda's from ebay because of all the fakes out there.

So i wanted to ask forum members for general opinion, would you start collecting say PF68's and 69's graded ones or OMP's in original box? I realize it's a personal choice for everyone but some general thoughts would be nice to hear.

At this point i would skip the pre-1989 ones because of their high price graded, and the fact there is so much nice modern stuff to get at that pricelevel at this point in time.

regards, mike

You can't go wrong with PF69. You don't want to end up sitting on a dog for 50 years. If you get PF69 you will do allright with it and KNOW you have good stuff. Makes it easy to sell too. 1989+ Proof pandas are so cheap you get some bang for your buck. Try getting that bang in gold LOL. Not going to happen. I vote go graded or go home period. Too many fakes out there.

Thanks. Yes i always remind myself that i need gold bullion.. It's just that even though gold bullion is important to have, at times it can be very boring compared to other MCC :)

Buy OMP if you can access and identify it physically with experience. It is fun and exciting to grade it and train your skills and build experience by paying tuition fee.

NOT buy online if you feel it is not trusted sources.

Coin shows/expos are the best place to see a lot of coins in a short amount of time. I love buying coins at shows because I have good grading skill and sometimes I find undergraded coins for a very cheap price.

I've never been to a coin expo, i hope to be able to go one day, but i feel i would not be very happy there unless i had a big amount of cash with me.. On a similar subject, i think that in the summer 2015 PCGS had a grading show/expo in Paris, it required applying for membership and paying a fee in advance, but with the membership you could actually go there and have your coins graded on the spot while you waited.

I wanted to go, but it never was to be, however if i ever have the funds and they have another event like that, i think i'd definitely be interested in the experience.

I like to watch the event calendar on this forum for upcoming shows. Sometimes there is one near wherever I will be traveling. I don't always go to coin expos, but when I do, I take lots of cash with me. Sometimes I find nothing, and sometimes I find something so sweet it pays for all of my traveling. The trick is being ready with lots of cash. Cash is power. When the dealers find out you have cash, they want to meet you, haha.

Most of the best deals happen at the beginning of the show, or just before it starts when all the dealers make deals with each other. Those "dealer only" times are one good reason to officially rent a table at the expo, and only use it get access to early deals.

The next best time to buy is when you see a dealer starting to pack up his coins, to go home. Very often I will see a coin I want, but the dealer is asking too much money for it. Sometimes I find coins I might buy if the price is right, but I don't want to make a strong offer for it. If I pull out my cash and pretend to start counting it right in front of him while he's packing, I can wait a moment and then make an offer on some of the coins I wanted. If he has more than one coin, I can make an offer on all of them. I end up getting "dealer only" prices at the end of the show, in a good fraction of my attempts to haggle a deal at the end. Sometimes the dealer did not do very well at the show, and he needs cash. In that case, he might be willing to take a loss instead of going home without the big wad of cash I'm waving around.

I'm sure other people have secret bargaining tricks of their own.

actually these events happen all the time, here is the PCGS schedule:

http://www.pcgseurope.com/InternationalShows?l=en

edit: only few of them mention "On-Site grading"

edit 2: Looking at that list, On-Site grading only happens in Paris and Hong Kong, and one such event started today in Paris.
