1985 Xinjiang autonomy 2 coin sets sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price: 252513259981, 262594748448. From sturm-rober (new, ending, sold). Both of these sold today, but they sold a bit less than an hour apart, so at first I thought it's less likely the same person bought them both. It would still be more likely it was a single buyer, but I thought the possibility exists that the second sale was a "copy-cat" buy from someone jealous that the other one got away, especially if the 2 buyers know each other. However, I was wrong about all that. A closer look at the listings showed the second one was a new listing from the same seller at the same price. If the deal was good in the first sale, it must have been good in the second sale too, so it was probably the same buyer that grabbed them both when he noticed another one got relisted. Aggressive buying!

1992 gold plated copper CNS Chinese numismatic treasures dragon and phoenix gold coin replica 2 coin set sold in a Best Offer option: 151670158000 (price reveal). From thincat00 (new, ending, sold). Although dated 1992, the COA says it was "issued" in 1993. I'm guessing that's merely when the COA was printed and the coins were packaged for sale.

1993 gold plated copper CNS Chinese numismatic treasures dragon and phoenix gold coin replica 2 coin set sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price: 151670154589. From thincat00. It appears to me this sale and the one above come from a series beginning in 1990 and ending in 2000. The COA gives mintages of 50'000 for each set, but I'm highly skeptical that many plated copper coins could be sold worldwide during the 1990's. Not even the most popular precious metal pandas could be sold in such large volumes in that time. Whether the full mintage was produced and/or destroyed is an open question that needs more research. Both of these sets sold within seconds of each other, so it's almost certainly the same buyer that grabbed them both.

1984 PRC 35th anniversary sold in a cheap auction: 252497992237. I also saw these "trial production" coins that the seller say are "not real coins": 201644196475. By that does he mean non-fiat coins? Trial strikes from an official PRC mint? Are they privately minted fakes or replicas? There are more: Search ebay for "trial" items sold by d1635957.

Shanghai 2003 brass lunar flower goat with edge lettering: 131903850887. From ggoodluck2013 (new, ending, sold). Mintage 2000. This is another PRODUCTION PROTOTYPE! It's basically a pattern or trial strike, but it was minted in large enough numbers to be considered "production". Until now, the only production prototype I was aware of was the 2014. According to ggoodluck2013, it was intended to prototype the Shanghai Mint's edge lettering process for complex shapes, probably using specially-shaped collars to match the shape of the coins and planchets.

1979 gold UN Year of the Child NGC 69 sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price: 311684255790. A nice cultural coin sale.

1986 silver Empress of China clipper ship sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price: 252501399967. I like to watch these to gauge the market for "cultural coins". These have been available for as little as $40 in the recent past, but this is 50% higher than that. I'm hoping this is a sign of market strength, and not a fluke. The fact it's a Buy-It-Now probably means the buyer couldn't find it anywhere else for less money, although a search on ebay might turn up something (I didn't look myself).

[...]

thincat00 (new, ending, sold) just listed some more of these China Numismatic Society (CNS) numismatic treasures sets:

* 1992: 162181496481 (1993 issue date on COA).
* 1993: 152219761132.
* 1994: 152219761131 (1995 issue date on COA).
* 1996: 152219761134.
* 1997: 182257280361.

NONE of these coins have proper descriptions in their ebay listings, which makes them impossible to find by searching for them. You have to stumble upon them by accident, which is stupid. Dealers who make rookie mistakes like this have worse sales than dealers who know what they're doing. At least they're all in the right category - many experienced dealers are unable to put their coins in the correct category! That's basic.

Nanjing 2016 copper panda sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price: 222230958423. From luckmoneyro (new, ending, sold). The actual sale prices on these have DOUBLED already. This happened much faster than I expected. Congratulations to everyone who got one at the intro price! I think it's interesting to note this 2016 copper panda has a mintage of 199, and its new higher price now matches the price for the less-rare 2014 copper panda that has a mintage of 380: 222231320609. It makes sense, and based on this information I expect the value of the rarer 2016 version to continue to rise until it surpasses the value of the older one by significant margin. How much, exactly, I'm not sure. It would require further study and analysis to come up with a good guess about what a maximum short term fair price limit should be, like I did with the baby pandas: Just got my Silver Baby Panda back from NGC - what is the forward potential?

2016 30 g silver Dazu rock carvings NGC 69 sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price: 131920180421. From mcm (new, ending, sold).

2016 1 kg silver panda NGC 69 sold in a cheap auction: 131903880981. From mcm. Mintage 20'000. This sold for $34.12 per ounce of silver. Not bad for a somewhat high mintage big silver panda. It's about double bullion value, so these are profitable. This is one of the few sizes that did not change when China made the switch to metric weights in 2016. The 1 kg size has always been popular. I have been watching like a vulture to see if the highest mintage big silver pandas might sell for closer to bullion value, but not yet, and probably not any time soon. Big gold sometimes sells for below bullion value, but silver is completely different, and has no trouble supporting high numismatic valuations.

A "custom order" agreed upon outside ebay, but transacted on ebay: 222232546262. This is done to ensure the buyer has ebay and PayPal's buyer protection.

1979 gold PRC 30th anniversary fiat 4 coin set sold in a Best Offer option: 232062562344 (price reveal).

Privately minted 2012 500 g silver panda 30th anniversary NGC 65 sold in a cheap auction: 191946032770. This has been relisted many times with a reserve in the auction, but nobody bothered to bid because reserve auctions are a waste of time. This time, the reserve was removed and it ended up selling for more than the reserve! This is a privately minted coin tha somehow got certified as an official coin. However, it is popular just like the Xi Shi, and that makes it worth mentioning.

Is that the one with the interesting flag situation? I seem to remember doing research on that recently. Do you remember where the research got posted? I'd like to review it again and refresh my memory.

Jinling Hotel Rabbit brass OMP  Nanjing Mint   $12.99   Sold      Ebay 272340528973.........Cheap, early year Nanjing Mint....IF Nanjing Mint becomes popular than this brass is peanuts......

I have been paying attention to coins like this lately. It's an interesting find, and I'd like to research it a bit more. If the mints stop doing commission work, coins like these will become historical oddities that fascinate collectors, especially if an interesting story can be found somewhere behind them. The Nanjing mint in particular is special in this regard since they both still do this kind of commission work, and they're trying to compete with Shanghai for respectability, which is having mixed results for now, but eventually they'll get it right just like the Shanghai mint themselves did in the 1980's and 1990's. More about that described here:

Seller of Trial Coins got back to me.    Well known and knowledgeable seller.    He has held these Trial Coin commemoratives for about 20 yrs.    The material is different from real coins so weight is different.    The Trial Coin run is before the real coins are struck.    NOT immitations or fakes.    These commemorative Trial Coins are the real deal.    I think many overlooked this ebay auction.    These Trial Coins could have value.     Does anyone have any information?    Badon, these are worth looking into and contacting your dealers in China......

I have been updating these market summaries a more frequently lately. Maybe eventually we can chart some of the statistics to see if we can recognize any patterns or trends in the data. For now, the only thing that stands out to me is the fact there aren't a lot of sales for nice coins after this last weekend that haven't already been mentioned.
