1985 Xinjiang autonomy 2 coin sets sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price:
252513259981,
262594748448. From
sturm-rober (
new,
ending,
sold). Both of these sold today, but they sold a bit less than an hour apart, so at first I thought it's less likely the same person bought them both. It would still be more likely it was a single buyer, but I thought the possibility exists that the second sale was a "copy-cat" buy from someone jealous that the other one got away, especially if the 2 buyers know each other. However, I was wrong about all that. A closer look at the listings showed the second one was a new listing from the same seller at the same price. If the deal was good in the first sale, it must have been good in the second sale too, so it was probably the same buyer that grabbed them both when he noticed another one got relisted. Aggressive buying!
1992 gold plated copper CNS Chinese numismatic treasures dragon and phoenix gold coin replica 2 coin set sold in a Best Offer option:
151670158000 (
price reveal). From
thincat00 (
new,

sold). Although dated 1992, the COA says it was "issued" in 1993. I'm guessing that's merely when the COA was printed and the coins were packaged for sale.
1993 gold plated copper CNS Chinese numismatic treasures dragon and phoenix gold coin replica 2 coin set sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price:
151670154589. From
thincat00. It appears to me this sale and the one above come from a series beginning in 1990 and ending in 2000. The COA gives mintages of 50'000 for each set, but I'm highly skeptical that many plated copper coins could be sold worldwide during the 1990's. Not even the most popular precious metal pandas could be sold in such large volumes in that time. Whether the full mintage was produced and/or destroyed is an open question that needs more research. Both of these sets sold within seconds of each other, so it's almost certainly the same buyer that grabbed them both.
1984 PRC 35th anniversary sold in a cheap auction:
252497992237. I also saw these "trial production" coins that the seller say are "not real coins":
201644196475. By that does he mean non-fiat coins? Trial strikes from an official PRC mint? Are they privately minted fakes or replicas? There are more:

Shanghai 2003 brass lunar flower goat with edge lettering:
131903850887. From
ggoodluck2013 (
new,
ending,
sold). Mintage 2000. This is another PRODUCTION PROTOTYPE! It's basically a pattern or trial strike, but it was minted in large enough numbers to be considered "production". Until now, the only production prototype I was aware of was the 2014. According to ggoodluck2013, it was intended to prototype the Shanghai Mint's edge lettering process for complex shapes, probably using specially-shaped collars to match the shape of the coins and planchets.
1979 gold UN Year of the Child NGC 69 sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price:
311684255790. A nice cultural coin sale.
1986 silver Empress of China clipper ship sold for the full Buy-It-Now asking price:
252501399967. I like to watch these to gauge the market for "cultural coins". These have been available for as little as $40 in the recent past, but this is 50% higher than that. I'm hoping this is a sign of market strength, and not a fluke. The fact it's a Buy-It-Now probably means the buyer couldn't find it anywhere else for less money, although a search on ebay might turn up something (I didn't look myself).
